Each member of the 2nd Company is a consummate warrior, proficient in the use of any type of weapon, but those in the Vanguard Veteran Squads prefer close combat to anything else. They are seasoned warriors who have long served in their Chapter's Assault Squads and are the finest hand-to-hand combatants a Space Marine has to offer.

They are most commonly armed with bolt pistols, chainswords, krak and frag grenades, and are equipped with jump packs. However, their position in the order gives them the right to use even rarer weapons, such as Relic Blades. These ancient blades are so rare, and the honor to possess them so great, that the veterans of the vanguard will do everything possible to recover the weapons lost in battle.

Veteran Vanguards are most often deployed as Rapid Reaction Forces, deployed to attack weak spots in enemy defenses or assist allies in distress. Due to their equipment and skill in combat, they rarely linger in one place for a long time, after the destruction of one enemy they move to attack another. It is known about the friendly rivalry between them and their battle brothers, veterans of the rear guard, which, however, does not affect their combat effectiveness in any way.
